Bratton Clovelly Church of St Mary the Virgin history

A Norman church but on a site dating back to Saxon times, St Mary’s is notable for rare and magnificent 17th century wall paintings which are now cared for by English Heritage.

The church has a Norman font but much of the interior was renovated in the 19th century to a very high standard. The windows are very fine examples of 19th century work by Lavers & Westlake, London.

St Mary’s has a matched set of six Pennington Bells, cast in 1767, which are rung regularly.
